Marching with the Nation, Striving for Dreams: The Responsible Spirit of Chinese Youth
2026-01-03 06:38

Recently, Grenada celebrated Youth Month, highlighting the energy, aspirations, and sense of responsibility of its younger generation. I was deeply impressed by this celebration. It also brought to mind the youth of China, who are contributing their vitality and talent to the great endeavor of national modernization. While Chinese youth are pursuing their aspirations and building meaningful careers, the society is responding by providing more inclusive spaces, diverse opportunities, and supportive policies, thereby fostering an environment in which their potential can flourish.

First, the trend of young Chinese people exploring diverse career options is fundamentally a proactive redefinition of success. By venturing into areas like content creation, online education, and rural revitalization, they are actively shaping their futures from within, channeling their talents and ideals into endeavors that align personal ambition with broader societal needs. For instance, a young man teamed up with friends in Anji County, transforming an abandoned quarry into the social media sensation “Deep Blue Project” café, and has now grown into an eco-tourism company employing over 120 young people. Not only did it set a record of selling 8,818 cups in a single day within 24 months, but it also converted a neglected landfill into a rural exhibition-style park, which has welcomed 150,000 visitors since its launch in 2024. From competing in the digital economy to dedicating themselves to technological innovation, from serving the country with their skills to returning home to pursue their dreams, a growing number of Gen Z and Gen ɑ young entrepreneurs are injecting new vitality into economy through their creativity. At the same time, aligned with the 15th Five-Year Plan, which prioritizes promoting high-quality and full employment as a key aspect of ensuring and improving people’s livelihoods, Chinese government has rolled out comprehensive policies such as one-stop services, funding support mechanisms, and vocational skill training to vigorously foster youth employment and entrepreneurship, effectively fostering an inclusive social environment.

Second, the dedication of young professionals in China reflects a profound commitment to achieving technological self-reliance and making enduring contributions to national development. This spirit thrives within the dynamic landscape of China’s economy, which has been described as “a vast ocean”by President Xi Jinping. As the world’s largest engine of growth, this expansive economic environment not only propels national progress but also lifts up the aspirations and capabilities of the younger generation. Young engineer Han Chao defied foreign dominance in submersible robotics, leading a team under 30 to complete breakthrough projects such as China’s first 1,500-meter submarine pipeline installation. Through relentless effort, he became the country’s youngest internationally certified submersible robotics director and now pioneers a national innovation studio, aiming to achieve full technological independence. His story reflects how young Chinese today are not only embracing hard challenges with a forward-looking mindset, but also channeling their skills into strategically vital fields—turning national needs into arenas of excellence. Their efforts, supported by a growing culture of innovation and national platforms, are steadily strengthening the foundation for high-quality development and exemplify the determined spirit shaping China’s future.

Third, the younger generation in China is not only passionate about traditional culture and intangible cultural heritage activities but also well-versed in modern technology and committed to innovation, which has greatly contributed to the popularity of the “Guochao” trend. Indeed, Guochao refers to a product form rooted in China’s rich traditional culture while incorporating modern aesthetics and fashionable elements. It serves as a vital bridge connecting traditional charm with modern values and acts as an innovative engine for creating new consumption scenarios and driving consumption upgrades. Through new media platforms such as short videos, animation, and digital art, young people have deeply integrated traditional culture with contemporary aesthetics, transforming cultural heritage into a modern trend and enabling it to reach a wider audience. In their leisure time, young people enjoy watching comedies, attending lectures on cultural heritage, creating handicrafts related to intangible cultural heritage, and experimenting with innovative forms like “AI + traditional Chinese painting.” The story of Yang Shuting is a powerful testament to this spirit of integration and social responsibility. Despite high-level paraplegia, she founded the Guochao brand Qiyu Qishi, establishing three poverty alleviation workshops in impoverished towns. Through live-streaming sales and e-commerce platforms, she has helped 59 disabled individuals from over 30 villages, more than 380 registered low-income households, and 1,386 villagers achieve prosperity.

The impact of this youth-led trend is substantial. The Guochao market in China has already exceeded 2 trillion yuan and is projected to surpass 3 trillion yuan by 2028. This growth is further supported by institutional frameworks: various regions are exploring dedicated cultural funds, and cultural innovation platforms jointly built by local governments and universities provide strong support for young people to participate in cultural development. The 15th Five-Year Plan  emphasizes the significant task of “stimulating the cultural innovation and creativity of the whole nation, and promoting the prosperous development of socialist culture.” This will further advance the high-quality development of cultural endeavors and industries, steadily strengthen the construction of a cultural powerhouse, and meet the diverse, multi-level, and multifaceted spiritual and cultural needs of the people.

Chinese youth have always integrated their personal aspirations into the cause of the nation and its people. Whether through redefining success across diverse fields, pursuing technological self-reliance with long-term dedication, or revitalizing culture with innovative fusion, they are writing a new chapter of endeavor for the times with vibrant energy and concrete actions. In advancing high-quality economic development, fostering socialist democratic politics, enriching socialist culture, promoting social progress, and jointly building a beautiful China, their presence and wisdom shine through in every endeavor. On the new journey toward realizing the Second Centenary Goal and comprehensively building a modern socialist country, Chinese youth are embracing their mission with unwavering conviction, soaring spirit, and innovative drive, demonstrating a determined, proactive, and upward-looking ethos.

This endeavor and commitment find their echo in a universal calling. The future of the world is intertwined with the prospects of every young individual and hinges on their efforts and perseverance. As long as the youth of all nations unite and move forward together—committed to equality and consultation, openness and innovation, solidarity in times of difficulty, and upholding justice—they will surely steer the world away from the shadows of conflict, rivalry, and strife. Together, they can build a global village marked by peace, development, and kinship, and jointly create a future characterized by win-win cooperation, shared prosperity, health and security, and mutual respect and learning. In doing so, they will be contributing to the great course of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
